ABOUT HERITAGE GRANGE AT THURSTON

Located just three miles out of Bury St Edmunds in Thurston Suffolk, Heritage Grange is a characteristic hotel, restaurant with functions rooms and spa therapy room which charms from the moment you set eyes on it. The 3 star Hotel is one of those beautiful hideaway ‘secrets’, a stunning Tudor style building.

The rustic, homely appearance of the building set amongst its own secluded garden area of open countryside provides a warm welcome. Built in 1895, the hotel is just 3 miles out of Bury St Edmunds, in the village of Thurston. Moments from the A14, ideally positioned in a central Eastern spot, 20 - 35mins from Ipswich, Cambridge and Newmarket.

en-suite bedrooms, restaurant serving variety of wholesome flavoured dishes and Afternoon Teas. 

A Lounge bar opening onto the terrace and gardens. A banquet room for functions, weddings, parties and conferences. Private dining areas, conference facilities and a spa therapy room.

HISTORY

Heritage Grange formally known as Grange County Manor House was built in 1895 for Col. Henry John Blagrave. The Colonel employed local people as his staff, with the gardener taking residence in the cottage at the bottom of the drive.

  • Maids & Butlers had separated living quarters and the Old Stables next door. The estate was sold four years later to become a gentlemen's club. Edward William Chance, J.P, owned several Gentlemen's clubs in Yorkshire, Hurlingham and London.

  • Grange Country Manor House remained that way until the outbreak of World War II where it became a make-shift hospital after Rougham Hall was bombed. 

  • The British Royal Air Force camped on the grounds and the United States Army visited regularly. During the final years of the War, Grange Country Manor House changed hands many times.

PAST OWNERS

Reputed owners who followed were Arthur Stewart Hinton and Nigel Harold Scott Hambro, a local banker who built and later moved into Grange View (the bungalow between Barton Road and Grange Country Manor House). 

  • Hambro then sold the house to Thake and Schofield, a husband and wife team. They then sold Grange Country Manor House to Mr. Berden who turned the house into bedsit flats.

  • Mr. Berden left the house in 1971 in a derelict state. Two-and-a-half years later the Wagstaff family bought Grange Country Manor House and converted it into a hotel “Heritage Grange” and extended the property. 

PRESENT DAY

The Wagstaff family sold The Grange Hotel thirty-three years later to new Management Team in 2007 who re-branded to “The Grange Country House Hotel”. Re-branding again in 2022 to “Heritage Grange At Thurston”

  • Since then they have been working hard to take Heritage Grange to the next stage of development with the intention of restoring the country house to its former glory, whilst at the same time accommodating all modern requirements.

  • Heritage Grange as you see it today, following the long driveway from the quiet country road, is a stunning Tudor-style country house set in truly spectacular landscaped gardens in the heart of the countryside. Heritage Grange is truly a hidden gem of Suffolk.

  • Rebranding to Heritage Grange At Thurston to bring back the heritage feel of the building in the village of Thurston and its characteristic charm, with interior warm colours of deep reds, golds and black.
